Chapter 28

Mathew

Matt pulled into the driveway only to discover his mother’s vehicle missing. A quick call to his mom informed him that she and Selah were getting ready to check out of a store and would be home in fifteen minutes.

Matt decided to use the extra time wisely and scrolled through his contacts until he made it to Paul Richard’s name. He stared at his phone for a minute before taking a deep breath and began speaking to the stirring wheel again.

“I can do this.” He mustered up his courage and pressed the call button.

Calling Addie’s father was the right thing to do, and Matt knew he couldn’t go through with the wedding without his approval. However, his palms were sweating, and he was suddenly feeling a little claustrophobic.

He needed air.

Had he turned off the car?

No, he raised his hand to the vent, and the air was flowing out of it. That wasn’t the problem. The phone was ringing, and Matt’s mind was starting to spin.

What was he going to say?

“Shoot,” Matt said.

He really should have thought of that before he hit the call button. Was it too late to hang up and regroup?

Right before he pulled his phone down to do just that, a deep voice came across the line. “Paul Richards speaking. How can I help you?”

Mathew took a resounding breath; he could do this. “Hello, Sir. This is Mathew Gordan. I was hoping to speak to you for a minute. Is now a good time, or would you like me to call back later?”

“Matt Gordan, this is a surprise. What can I do for you?”

“Well, sir,” he cleared his throat, “I’m not exactly sure where to begin.”

“I find the beginning is always a good place to start.” Paul chuckled a little at his joke, which oddly enough put Matt at ease.

The problem was Matt didn’t know where the beginning was. “Sir, are you aware that my sister, Emily, and Addie had become good friends?”

“Yes, she’s mentioned Emily and Jesse to us quite a bit. They’ve helped Addie through a challenging time in her life, and my wife and I will forever be grateful to them for that.”

“Thank you, Sir. They were amazing and are also partly why I’m calling you today.”

“What do you mean were?” Paul asked puzzled by Matt’s use of the past tense.

Matt went on to explain what had transpired over the past week. “You see, they left me custody of their twin daughters. Well, they left custody of their twin daughters to both Addie and me.”

Mathew said the last part quietly. He wasn’t sure Addie’s dad had heard him until Mr. Richards said, “I see.”

Did he truly see?

Mathew had to make sure he fully understood. “Sir, part of the will stipulated that Addie and I get married as quickly as possible. We have talked it over thoroughly, and she has agreed to marry me.”

A slight cough came through the line. “Addie’s agreed to marry you? So, this phone call…”

Matt could hear the questions in the older man’s voice, both those he spoke audibly and those he hadn’t put a voice to.
